From his travels, he saw the work of the Renaissanceand Baroque periods as exemplar in their use and manipulation ofpublic space and as such he wanted to achieve a unity between modernmethods and the artistic techniques of the past. Sitte was concerned that impressive modern buildings wereincreasingly being seen against a backdrop of poor public space as allresources were poured into the architecture of a building, not itssurroundings. Whilst Sitte laments theloss of these artistic methods and techniques witnessed during hisfrequent travels throughout Europe, he accepted that moderntechniques were required in city planning with particular regard toincreased levels of hygiene and motorised traffic. The book is mainly concernedwith the increasingly technical way our cities were being designed atthe expense of traditional artistic methods. These ideas were based primarily on the plaza andassociated public space and were presented in CityPlanningaccordingtoArtisticPrinciples. Through his travels, Sitte observed how these cities haddeveloped and established a set of principles by which he believed citiesshould be planned. He travelled extensively throughout Europevisiting cities in Italy, France and Germany as well as his nativeAustria. He worked in a time of intense change in Europeancities as economic factors, sanitation and transport were becoming themost important influences on city planning - planning was becomingan exercise undertaken in plan on the drafting board, not on site in thestreet or the square. Whilst Sitte trained as anArchitect, he had a strong artistic background and found prominenceas an academic. Camillo Sitte was born in Vienna and it was herewhere he conducted the basis of his work. Upon its publication a new breed oftheorists and practitioners developed who were concerned with the cityand its planning.
